Marietta’s Lady Indians played in the Arbuckle Winter Classic, held at Davis High School, January 6-8, and came home big winners.

In Thursday’s first round game, Marietta faced Lexington. After falling behind 11-10 at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Indians exploded in the second, scoring 28 points, and taking a 38-22 lead into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, Marietta kept up the pace and pressure, outscoring Lexington in both quarters and coming out on top at the final buzzer, 63-42, to advance in the winner’s bracket.

Leading scoring for the Lady Indians was Toriauna Douglass with 16 points. Kaylie Douglass had 13, and Haven Matthews had 10 points. Maddie Torres and Joley Heydon had six points apiece, and Ashlyn Douglass had three points. Tanasia Randle, Reagan Denham, Yaslin Sanchez, Luciana Douglass, and Amanda Flores had two points apiece to round out the night’s scoring.

In the semi-finals on Friday, Marietta met Velma-Alma. The Lady Indians jumped out to a big 15-3 lead in the first quarter and never looked back, outscoring their opponent in every quarter and coasting to an easy win, 49-26, and advancing to the tournament finals.

Toriauna and Kaylie Douglass led scoring with 10 points apiece. Maddy Torres and Joley Heydon were close behind with nine and eight points, respectively, while Luciana Douglass had six points. Haven Matthews and Kaiya Douglass had three points apiece.

Saturday’s championship round matched the Lady Indians against the Davis Lady Wolves. Marietta came out hot, unintimidated against the home team. The Lady Indians led 13-7 at the end of the first quarter, and never stopped fighting, winning the game and the tournament championship by a final score of 33-30.

Kaylie Douglass was the leading scorer for Marietta with eight points. Toriauna Douglass, Maddy Torres, Luciana Douglass, and Ashlyn Douglass had five points apiece. Yaslin Sanchez scored three points, and Reagan Denham had two on the night.

“To say that I am very proud of how the team has competed, not only this week, but from the summer until now is an understatement,” said Head Coach Tory Douglass. “I have pushed these girls to the max and they keep coming back. I just love these young ladies and their fight.”
