On February 19, 2026 FCCLA officers attended the annual Family and Consumer
Sciences Day at the Capitol. Officers had the opportunity to meet with both
Representative Josh Cantrell and Senator Spencer Kern to advocate for Family and
Consumer Sciences Education and FCCLA.
Students sat in on a senate session and then were able to sit in on a committee
meeting.
“Listening in on the committee meeting was a great experience,” said Elaina Avirneni.
“We actually got to see what goes on behind the scenes and how our bills are passed.”
The saw a small glimpse of how bills advance to the House and Senate floor for voting.
“It’s eye-opening to see what actually goes on at this level to see the opportunities that
are out there for us,” stated Liliana Fernandez.
They also attended a session on how to talk with legislators and on the importance of
advocating for a cause.
“This is one of my favorite activities that we do because it shows students something
they don’t often get to see,” explained Advisor Amanda Faulkenberry. “They often think
it’s going to be a boring day, but it opens their eyes to how government works. This
often opens up conversations about different opportunities that are available to
students. They usually walk away having enjoyed the day and feeling like it was a great
learning experience.
