In recent weeks, students in Marietta High School’s English IV classes have been
working on building their resume, along with job-seeking and interviewing – real world
skills to help them be ready for real-world living.
“This project is an important way to finish our English IV curriculum by learning work-
appropriate behaviors and skills that will be utilized in the world of higher education and
the workforce,” said Danielle Neble, senior English teacher.
More than just creating a paper resume, Neble taught students about the importance of
continued learning and personal growth – even after graduation – and discussed the
necessity of professional behaviors like eye contact, a firm handshake, timeliness, and
preparation.
Last week, several community leaders visited campus to conduct mock interviews.
Represented were Red River Valley REA, Family Shelter of Southern Oklahoma, Mercy
Love County, and SOTC.
“We are so grateful to have these community leaders and businesses who are willing to
support our school system and our students,” Neble stated.
Although students believed they were doing “practice” interviews, in both years that
Neble has conducted the project, a few students have actually been hired by their
interviewers for part-time or summer jobs.
“The kids were not expecting to be hired for real job,” smiled Neble. “They just thought
they were sitting in interviews for a grade in English IV. But if one or 50 of these
students leave my class with a paying job, a career future, or even just the skill set to
enter the world, then I believe the project was successful.”
