It’s spring, and at schools across the state, educators know it’s time packed with testing.
Marietta Public Schools has scheduled testing for the elementary, middle, and high
schools, beginning March 24 and concluding May 6, as follows:
March 24: junior ACT
April 1: junior state testing
April 14: third grade English Language Arts
April 15: third grade Math
April 16: eighth grade Science and fifth grade Writing
April 21: sixth grade English Language Arts and fourth grade English Language
Arts
April 22: eighth grade English Language Arts and fourth grade Math
April 23: seventh grade English Language Arts and fifth grade Science
April 28: eighth grade Writing and fifth grade English Language Arts
April 29: sixth grade Math and fifth grade Math
April 30: eighth grade Math and elementary make-up testing
May 5: seventh grade Math and elementary NWEA testing
May 6: elementary NWEA testing
With the exception of the NWEA testing, which is computer testing used to measure
academic growth and proficiency in several academic areas, all testing is state-
mandated, which means it is required by the Oklahoma State Department of Education
and generally used to produce a “report card” for the school system.
The state testing is generally referred to as “high stakes” testing because the school’s
report card is not only released to the public as a picture of performance, but the testing
is also used by OSDE to make decisions regarding funding and other vitally important
aspects of public education.
Because of the importance of testing, parents are asked to make sure their children are
well-rested, eat breakfast at home or at school, and be at school on time. Additionally,
parents are asked to talk to their children – no matter what age – and encourage them
to do their best on the test.
