Longtime Marietta educator Amanda Faulkenberry has been named the Oklahoma
Association of Family and Consumer Sciences teacher of the year.
OAFCS, the professional organization for Family and Consumer Sciences
Professionals, selected Faulkenberry based on her contributions as an Family and
Consumer Sciences teacher. The award seeks to identify exemplary programs, teaching
techniques, and activities that could inspire other teachers.
Evaluations are based on development and implementation of innovative and creative
programs, evidence of impact of programs, and effectiveness of the teacher to
encourage student growth in and out of the classroom.
“It is an honor to be recognized for my work in FCS,” said Faulkenberry. “I have worked
to promote Family and Consumer Sciences education in our community so that people
know we are teaching students these important life skills that many people believe have
been lost through the years.”
Faulkenberry’s program focuses on life skills that were formerly known as home
economics – skills that many community members mistakenly believe are no longer
being taught in the public school.
“I began my teaching career at Marietta in the Fall of 2002 and have spent almost 24
years teaching here, but FCS has been an important part of my life since I was in eighth
grade,” explained Faulkenberry. “FCS education is something that I am very passionate
about.”
Faulkenberry has been a tireless promoter of her program and student successes for
many years.
“Mrs. Faulkenberry has been a vital part of our staff for a long time, and we are proud to
see her receive this recognition,” said Superintendent Brandi Naylor.
