Marietta High School’s aviation team and their coach Erin Hansen traveled to Mustang
on January 22 for the Western Oklahoma Regional Competition.
Marietta’s team members are Elizebeth Mote, Whytnie Watson, Brice Carlile, William
Rutledge, and William Watson.
The top four scoring teams earned the right to advance to the Oklahoma High School
Aviation State Championship – and Marietta’s team, along with Cache High School,
Westmoore High School, and the Oklahoma Aviation Academy, will all be advancing to
state, which will be held February 20 in Tulsa.
The regional meet was a question and answer format based on general aviation
knowledge, while the semi-final and final rounds at state competition will test knowledge
and application of flying skills using a professional flight simulator or flight training
device.
The regional and state competitions for high school aviation students are the first held in
the state and designed to recognize students who are thriving in high school programs
that are relatively new to Oklahoma.
“I’m so proud of how hard these students studied for this competition,” said Hansen.
“They encouraged each other and showed great teamwork.”
