Marietta High School’s Lady Indian fast pitch softball team will be fielding a young team
for the fall season. And after losing six seniors to graduation, they’ll be looking to some
new faces for leadership, too.
Coach Katelynn McCarn-Lewis, going into her third season as head coach, says it may
be a young team, but it’ll be one with a great deal of potential.
She plans to lean on three sophomores, Karrington Staton at pitcher, along with Keely
Wilson and Breqlynn Perryman, both utility players, to lead the team.
Joining Staton on the mound will be Kynleigh Gray. The two will share pitching duties for
the Lady Indians. Offense is another story altogether.
“When it comes to hitting and scoring runs, there isn’t one player that I will look to more
than any other,” explained McCarn-Lewis. “We have talked a lot about the mindset of
‘passing the bat,’ meaning that every girl is capable and we will work as a team to score
runs. It is not one person’s job, but everyone’s job to help move teammates around the
bases.”
McCarn-Lewis is thrilled to welcome eight incoming freshmen to the team.
“I’m excited for these kids and I see them doing great things for us as a team in the
future,” she said.
Last year’s team was heavy on seniors – an “older” team – while this year, the Lady
Indians will be young.
“But that’s not what defines these girls. They are so ready and eager to be out on the
field playing the game that they love,” McCarn-Lewis insisted. “Of course, what we want
for every outing is to win. But as for long term goals, the girls are working to always
have the fire in them, wanting to compete every pitch, every play, every day.”
McCarn-Lewis’s assistant coach will be Kenny Barnes. Tory Douglass coaches the Lady
Indians junior high team.
