In the Wynnewood Invitational Tournament, played December 14 through 16, Marietta High School’s Lady Indians were named runners-up after falling short in the championship round to Lone Grove.

Coach Tory Douglass had his team ready to play in the opening round against the Dibble JV team. The Lady Indians outscored Dibble in every quarter as they coasted to a 63-12 win.

Lexus Spanhanks and Laney Hicks led scoring with 12 points apiece, followed by Izabella Fernandez and Ashlyn Lucas-Douglass with 11 points apiece. Spanhanks hit two three-pointers and Fernandez hit one, also going three for five from the free throw line.

In the semi-final round against Crooked Oak, the Lady Indians again overpowered their opponents, outscoring them in every quarter. Marietta was up 24-15 at halftime, and continued to pressure Crooked Oak until the final buzzer rang on a 47-35 victory.

Izabella Fernandez was the leading scorer with eight points, one of those from beyond the three-point arc. Fernandez also went one for two from the free throw line. Laney Hicks had six points, including one three pointer, and Kaiya Douglass had five points with one from three-point land.

Saturday’s championship game against Lone Grove was a bit of a different story, as the Lady Indians faced their first real competition in the tournament. After the first quarter left the score knotted at 10-all, the Lady Longhorns found the bucket in the second, putting up 19 points to the Lady Indians’ five and taking a 29-15 lead into the locker room.

The Lady Indians never found their groove, and Lone Grove scored 25 points in the second half to win the game 54-27.

Ashlyn Lucas-Douglass led scoring with 14 points and was four of eight from the free throw line. Lexus Spanhanks had 13 points, shooting five for eight free throws. Kaiya Douglass had 10 points, including three three-pointers.

“Coach [Tanica] Anderson and I are proud of the girls,” said Head Coach Tory Douglass. “We have played nine tough games this month and some of our girls have played a lot of minutes. We just have to continue to grind and work on the little things and fundamentals that we need to have fixed before the playoffs start.”
